Finding the Right Web Designer

Friday, October 24th, 2008

A web designer is, you guessed it, a person who designs websites. Web designing is the art of preparing content for the World Wide Web including text, images, site architecture and multimedia. If you’ve often wondered how some sites can be so appealing, while others are simply appalling, the web designer probably had something to do with it! There are almost as many designers as websites and zeroing in on the right one can be a daunting task.

If you’re in the process of hiring one, make sure he or she isn’t the type that will drive away your traffic. How can you do that? It’s easy.

Decide geographic location: Since the internet has made physical distances irrelevant, you can hire a web designer from pretty much anywhere on planet Earth. Choosing a local vendor obviously has certain advantages - you can discuss issues face to face, which also allows you to keep things flexible and introduce changes as you go along. There’s also the comfort of better backup. However, using a vendor from another city might fetch better savings or higher quality. An international vendor might be even better. However, remember that you’ll need to specify everything in writing, and adhere to a strict follow up regimen. If you’re the type who has no time for meticulously drafted emails, stick to a local web designer. You can find them through the local yellow pages or a web search. They are likely to be listed according to specialization, for example professional web designers for small businesses, like, and

Make a shortlist: And that’s exactly what it should be. Don’t talk to more than three or four web designers. Check out their websites (how obvious can that be) and look at their range of services. When you examine their credentials, be sure to consider the type of clients they work for, the delivery that they commit to, and their technical and servicing capabilities.

Talk money: If you like what you see, ask for quotations. The price that you pay will depend on your requirements - a simple website design might cost you a small, flat fee. But if you need higher capabilities, for example, an online store, interactivity options, or sophisticated data management, costs will go up substantially. This is why getting quotes from at least two or three suppliers is so important, so you can be sure someone’s not ripping you off.

Conduct a background check: If you’ve identified a preferred vendor, conduct a bit of due diligence before you hand over the purchase order. The best thing to do is to speak with their other clients. Find out what they perceive as the key strengths of the chosen web designer, and also the major weaknesses. Ask them if you could see some of the work they commissioned.

Review the paperwork: The last step, but never the least. Don’t forget to carefully go through the standard agreements. In case of doubt, consult your legal adviser. Ensure time frame, project objectives and payment terms are clearly defined. Also mention what will happen in sticky situations, followed by a dispute settlement procedure.

Finally, you’ve got your web designer! This is when you can shake hands and sign up formally.
